BIRDWELL WHEELERS TIME TRIALS
Frequently asked questions
1 What is a Time Trial?
At its simplest it is a ride against the clock. It is NOT a bunch race. Riders set off at 1-minute intervals. You are competing against the clock – which usually means you’re trying to beat your own previous best time and not each other. The ‘club’ (usually Tuesday evening events and a lot more informal than ‘open’ events) operate a handicap system depending on age and ability. So everybody has a chance of being ‘the winner’ on any given evening.
Most of our courses use the ‘out-and-back’ system, often the turn is at a roundabout. But a couple of the courses do laps of a small circuit with all the turns being left ones so as to make things safer still. We have marshals at key junctions but we will explain the course clearly for any novices.
2 What do I need?
Yourself and your bike! Any bike that is roadworthy will suffice – including MTB’s, shopping bikes or hybrids! We provide a fluorescent number to wear on your back plus the safety pins to affix it.
3 Do I need any special equipment?
Absolutely not-just turn up and ride-everyone is welcome. The cost is £2.50 for non members (which includes insurance cover for the event) and £2 for members.
4 Do I need to do any special training?
Not really-if you can ride 10 miles you can ride a 10 mile time trial-if you enjoy it you may want to look at some more specific training to improve your times. You just need to be proficient at riding a bike – not proficient at going fast!
5 Will I be made welcome
Of course! Just introduce yourself to one of the Birdwell Wheelers and say you’re new to racing and we’ll help you understand the routine.
